Unfoldment of the Great Through Meditation

When they say beauty is only skin-deep, they are referring to physical beauty. Some smart
aleck even goes further to say that beauty goes down to the epidermis. But the point
is,despite efforts by many to go past the surface into inner beauty, the sad fact is many of us
judge each other by what we see, and we judge ourselves from this perspective as well.
There is no appreciation with the inner person, which is why many of us neglect to develop
out inner-self with the determination and perseverance that we expend on our outer
shells.After all, it is on this basis that we are measured. This is one of the many barriers to
the Unfoldment of the great within.

Ultimately, however, we are only left with ourselves. How we judge and criticize ourselves is
the basis of our source of happiness and fulfillment. Notice how the most admired and
successful individuals in the world end up destroying themselves with drugs and other risky
behavior. We think, how stupid, they have everything they can ever want in the world. Why
would they give it all up? That is exactly the point. Apparently, they do not always have
everything they need so why the need to succumb to self-destruction? What do they lack?
How can one get past what our eyes can see?

Many of these personalities have one thing in common: the inability to cope with their
success. Sometimes it is due to stress at work and at home; others due peer pressure and
the desire to be accepted; still others because they simply want to escape what has become
an intolerable life. They have no grounding, no core that they can hold on to no matter what
happens. We may believe that this only happens to the wealthy and successful, and yet it is
the rare person who experiences happiness simply by being alive. Happiness is always
dependent on outside agencies, rarely as a result of inner strength. Harmony and balance can
only come with self-knowledge and acceptance, and this can be accomplished with the help of
meditation.

Meditation is the generic term for many practices that involves the focusing of attention
towards the inner workings of the mind and how it can expand awareness and perspective.
The simplest form of meditation involves breathing, which should be easy enough since we all
need to breathe anyway. One technique is to simply notice the rhythm and structure of your
breathing. Your mind becomes focused on the rhythm and soon brings serenity and calmness
to your thoughts as your becomes slower and deeper. Others prefer chanting or humming as
a tool for focusing the mind towards achieving a state in which the mind retreats into the great
within, a mind detached from the external world. However, chanting is not for everyone
because it can sometimes be distracting, especially when it is off-tune. Breathing is
recommended because everybody can do it.  Once the mind achieves this detachment and
inwardness, and then the process of discovering the inner self and its patterns can begin.

It is essential before meditation is tried that the mind is at least prepared to withhold
judgment; it would be useless otherwise. Not everybody gets into a sufficiently meditative
state to actually achieve some spiritual Unfoldment in the first, or even second or third try. In
fact, most people feel very silly the first few times they try it and many get frustrate, but the
benefits for self-development and fulfillment can be significant if one perseveres. But if at the
outset there is resistance and skepticism. Then achieving a tranquil state becomes all the
more difficult.
