Developing and Strengthening Your Self Control
Many people have a hard time mastering, emotions, and instead letting their negative feelings
take over them. The art of self-control is one of the hardest to master, but really worth it once
it is perfected.
First, it is important to define exactly what self-control is. It is an alternative term for self-
discipline, and it involves the ability of a person to control his reactions and his impulses.
Some people perceive self-control as an imposing trait, which restricts your expressive side,
but self-control is actually an essential factor in personal success. How can self-control help
individuals?
Self-control keeps negative traits such as self-destruction and addiction at bay. It also helps a
person deal with obsessive-compulsive behavior. It also helps a person become the master of
his own life, and having the skill of self-control restores and maintains balance. The best thing
in maintaining your self-control is that you are prevented from doing over-emotional
responses that he can regret later on when he has become calm and collected. Just imagine
yourself developing that sense of independence, which prevents you from being dependent on
other people and prevents you from feeling helpless when the chips are down.
A person with self-control develops a certain degree of emotional and mental detachment that
aids greatly in giving him a peace of mind. Self-control helps a person achieve a healthy level
of assertiveness, willpower and self-esteem. Through self-control, you become a better
person, a better human being, as a whole.
As one goes through the process of learning how to have self-control, he will encounter many
obstacles. These are unbridled emotional reactions, tendency to act without thinking first, the
perception that having self-control makes one boring or an ordinary person, the tendency to
lose faith in one’s ability and character and lastly, is having inadequate personal motivation to
change or improve his state in life
On the other hand, it is also important for you to learning how to develop self-control while
focusing on the greater benefits. To do this, you have to ask yourself “What are the areas in
my life that I need to practice self-control.” Many people have problems with eating right,
shopping without overspending, not working to hard or working too hard, excessive drinking,
smoking and gambling. Accordingly, think hard and enumerate that factors that makes you
lose control over those areas.
In addition, think of a situation that visualizes you being a master of your emotions. Imagine
the scenario where you are calm, collected and in perfect control of yourself. Imagine how
good you look when you are in control. Hence, whenever you feel like losing control and
giving in to your impulses, say to yourself, “I can control myself, I am a grown person and I
know how to handle myself.” Or you can say, “I am the master of my life. No one manipulates
my thoughts and emotions but myself.”
Most importantly, try your hardest to practice your willpower. You will have to resist
temptations most of the time and you have to be prepared for it. Think of the benefit of
holding on to your horses rather than letting them lose and create havoc on your efforts to
have self-control.
Remember, self-control is all about not letting your fears and addictions from taking over your
life. It is about you taking control over the negative feelings present in your life. Having self-
control means you will enjoy better relationships with people, do better in your work and
other endeavors, and you will learn the things that need your attention and emotions from
those that should be ignored and left alone. Developing and strengthening your self-control
will make you a better person that you are today.
