How to Develop Self Control

Self-control is crucial for a person’s well being and for him to be able to be a productive
contributor of society. Without self-control, a person has no discipline and cannot make
rational decisions for himself. However, there are ways that this can be developed. Self-
control can be inculcated into the various aspects of our lives. And developing this aspect
means establishing mechanisms to control problems. Taking in control of our life means
reinforcing our capabilities to act in accordance to how we empower ourselves.

What could be the greatest step than to realize the real problem where self-control is not
considered? Consider your favorite places if it is where the problem begins. Is it possible that
your home, a place where you spend your quality time will be a place where your self-control
is lacking? Check your workplace too because you may be undergoing too much stress
considering the potentially highly pressured and stressful environment. Remember, dealing
with people on a daily basis requires extreme amount of discipline to wake up early, and to
work hard.

Never of course, forget your social life. Unfortunately, this can be an avenue of you loosing
grip on your self-control. Remember, our interaction with certain people may trigger
undesirable results, such as anger. Or where certain people and places may be a stimulus to
negative behavior such as overdrinking may occur.  It may also be recreational, when one is
shopping, or gambling leisurely and there is a tendency to accumulate debt. It can be in our
daily habits where one can get obsessive-compulsive about certain matters.

The second step to developing self-control is to identify what feelings are associated in those
aspects, leading a person to have irrational thoughts and behavior. It can be anger,
frustration, helplessness, stress, fear, anxiety, pressure, and emotional pain, feelings of
uselessness, guilt, and sadness.

Third, what thought patterns push you into acting that way? Feelings or emotions associated
with the loss of control have to be identified so that new rational thinking can be developed.

Fourth, repeat positive self-affirmations, which act as vehicles to counter negative emotion
and to help one visualize a positive outcome. By saying these self-affirmations, one can
resolve their feelings and have a clear idea of what change they want. Repeat them as many
times in a day as needed, especially in times where self-control is crucial. Make these
statements your power words everyday. for these words can keep you going and going no
matter how hard your pathways to success is: “I can do this,” “I am very able to control
myself,” “I am only human, it is alright to make mistakes as long as I pick myself up and
work towards my goal” and the like.

On the other hand, many people would like to remain as they are. But how would you further
enhance your self-control just being yourself? Well, you can actually picture yourself in a
situation where you would normally lose control.

Check what makes you angry. Mentally practice yourself dealing with these situations in the
right manner, without losing self-control. Ahead of time, identify positive actions, which you
will use when these situations arise.

Once you have identified these situations, the next you can do is provide outlets where you
can redirect your negative energy and convert them to productive things. How so, by making
a journal - Write down your daily thoughts, encounters when you have lost self-control, and
instead of feeling guilty, write down a resolution you can do to improve yourself. Doing the
same regularly will allow you to monitor your progress. You can then look back on where you
can improve yourself further. Another avenue you can do is draft a schedule. Planning daily
schedules and routines provides balance in your daily life for all the things you need to do.
Make time for priorities such as work, and leave room for healthy enjoyable things such as
exercise and relaxation.
